The Keckley Report

Paul KeckleyStrategery in Healthcare: Are Insiders Prepared to Shift?

“Healthcare’s insiders talk good games but default to incrementalist’ strategery not because the future is an unknown. It’s because many boards are uncomfortable with ‘too much’ change or, in some cases, executive comp is geared to risk avoidance and short-term financial success. Often, excuses masquerade as reasons. That’s why outsiders are gaining ground on insiders.

Healthcare’s future is not a repeat of its past. Strategery in every organization needs a fresh look– especially among its insiders.“

Using Interim Leadership to Strengthen Organizational Agility

AMN Healthcare B.E.Smith

AMN Healthcare B.E.SmithAMN Healthcare / B.E. Smith has a track record of success in providing experienced interim leaders to fill open positions while clients conduct searches for a replacement. An additional item, AMN Leadership / B.E. Smith is excited to offer is helping partners deploy interim leaders independent of a search, an approach called strategic interim leadership.

Strategic interim leadership can be defined as when an experienced outside leader is contracted to execute a strategic project or lead a key initiative and is distinctly different from utilizing large-scale consulting firms or hiring the occasional freelancer. They can provide interim candidates in as short as 48 hours.

The benefits of this approach are substantial and include:

  • Cost savings compared to large consulting projects.
  • Maintain strategic momentum.
  • Enhance organizational agility.

Members are invited to explore this subject further with the new report, Using Interim Leadership to Strengthen Organizational Agility, which addresses the drivers and critical success factors in deploying strategic interim leaders on a project basis.

MHA Workforce Webinar to Discuss Diverse Workforce Solutions

Understanding the workforce’s values, preferences, triggers and character traits is essential to developing relationships that create a healthy organization. This may sound basic, but many organizations continue to miss the mark. In a 2022 study conducted by the MHA and Escalent, the feeling of not having a voice and lack of communication by leadership is a main reason workers left healthcare. Understanding fundamental needs and creating policies that meet these needs is critical to the chaotic climate that exists now.

Human resource professionals are encouraged to join the All Too Human: Thoughts on Workforce webinar from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Jan. 26, 2023 for the opportunity to share ways to meet the needs of a diverse workforce. Conversations will be led by Patrick Irwin, Henry Ford Health, Marla Stuck, Oaklawn Hospital, and Deloris Hunt, Michigan Medicine.

The webinar is free of charges thanks to sponsors Merritt Hawkins and B.E. Smith. Members are asked to register by Jan. 24

Members with questions should contact Erica Leyko  at the MHA.
