A Leadership Program for Board Chairs, Chairs-Elect, Vice Chairs and Committee Chairs

Hospitals and health systems face significant adversity, yet Michigan providers continue to provide high-quality and accessible healthcare to their communities, in great part because of governing board, executives and staff leadership. The pillars of the MHA strategic action plan, which include workforce restoration and well-being, the viability of hospitals, the behavioral health crisis and continued efforts towards achieving health equity drive the resources and tools MHA creates and offers to the membership. We continually seek new partnerships and opportunities to offer members these valuable resources. governWell™ is a leading source for valuable educational programs, BoardBRIEFs, articles and customizable resources that will enable your board to advance its knowledge, skills, structure, practices and capacity for success in today’s increasingly challenging environment. governWell™ advisors are faculty for the American Hospital Association (AHA) and many state hospital associations and use many years of experience in healthcare operations and governance to guide boards toward greater success.

Purpose

Board and committee chairs are the role models for the board. They are responsible for molding trustees into a cohesive and effective team. Governance success is dependent on the chair’s ability to develop trustful relationships with the executive leadership teams and fellow board members, create strategy-based agendas and guide discussion to ensure meeting effectiveness.

The MHA Governance Affinity Group is designed to teach board chairs, chairs-elect, vice chairs and committee chairs to improve expertise and judgment, captivate and motivate board members and be a reflective listener. Faculty with real-life experience in healthcare and governance will provide affinity group members with the skills to:

  • Build trust with the C-suite and board members.
  • Develop board agendas that are relevant to the long-term strategic plan of the hospital.
  • Engage board members in deliberations while keeping meetings effective and on task.
  • Focus on outcomes not operations.
  • Encourage education that helps members be fully informed on issues.

The affinity group consists of:

  • A maximum of 50 people serving as a board chair, chair-elect, vice chair or committee chair.
  • Two 90-minute virtual sessions to be held on January 23 and March 12.
  • Customized agendas with ample time for robust discussion with the group and faculty.
  • Access to governance articles and templates in a dedicated portal.
  • The opportunity to learn from two experts with more than 25-years of healthcare experience as executive and governance leaders.

Todd Linden, MA, FACHE, is principle at Linden Consulting Inc., and a governance advisor for governWell™. Linden served as president and CEO of Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Grinnell, Iowa from 1994 through the end of 2017, at which time he was named CEO Emeritus. Linden works with governing boards on strategic planning, best practice development, building culture and optimal trustee/executive relationships.

Barbara Lorsbach, MBS, FACHE, is president of governWell™. Her focus is helping healthcare leaders solve their most complex and pressing governance and community impact issues. Throughout her 25+ year career, Lorsbach worked with many of the nation’s leading health systems and hospitals and was a senior vice president with the American Hospital Association. She established the AHA Center for Health Care Leadership and had executive management responsibility for member services, including serving as the senior management liaison to the AHA Small and Rural Hospital Governing Council.

The tuition for membership in the affinity group is:

  • $2,500 to register a maximum of four people who serve as board chair, board chair-elect, vice-chair or a committee chair on the same board.
  • $6,375 to register five or more people who serve as board chair, board chair-elect, vice-chair or a committee chair on the same board.
