Minimum Staffing Standards for Long-Term Care Facilities

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a proposed rule Sept. 1, to establish minimum staffing standards for long-term care (LTC) facilities, as part of the Biden Administration’s Nursing Home Reform initiative.

The MHA supports the goal to ensure safety and quality care in long-term care facilities and applauds the administration’s efforts in this space. Enacting a one-size-fits-all, unfunded mandate to guarantee a minimum LTC staffing level will have a number of unintended consequences. The MHA submitted a comment letter in response to this proposed rule, detailing the MHA’s concerns and asking CMS not to finalize the rule as proposed.
