Virtual Maternal Health Quality Improvement Courses Available

Patient Safety and Quality, Member News

The Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (MI AIM) is offering virtual modules to support maternal health quality improvement efforts. All obstetric team members at MI AIM participating birthing hospitals are encouraged to complete the courses.

This approximately three-hour series consists of the following three modules:

MI AIM Collaborative Orientation

Focuses on criteria for each program year by highlighting requirements for birthing hospital participation, data collection and reporting, and quality improvement implementation.

MI AIM Data Overview

Walks through the KeyMetrics system, learning how to navigate the pages within the dashboard, filter between hospital, region and state data, and interpret data and graphs.

Fundamentals of Quality Improvement

Provides an exploration of the Quality Improvement Model, the Plan, Do, Study, Act cycle, instructions on conducting a GAP analysis and for crafting SMART goals.

The public’s appetite to slow health spending, expose prices and costs and address the system’s waste, fraud and abuse is strong and growing. It’s certain to figure prominently in Congress’ budget negotiations and increasingly in household spending decisions.

MI AIM Opens Applications for $25,000 Grant for Participating Birthing Hospitals

The Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (MI AIM) recently announced its partnership with United Healthcare to offer $25,000 to three birthing hospitals in Michigan to purchase equipment to support staff education.

All Michigan birthing hospitals participating in the MI AIM collaborative are invited to apply by July 1, 2025. Applicants must complete all required fields in the survey for consideration. Any submissions with unanswered fields will be considered incomplete and will not be scored.

The MHA Keystone Center will connect with applicants via email to confirm their award status.

MI AIM Spring Regional Training Approaching

The Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (MI AIM) is offering regional training sessions for inpatient maternal health providers focused on implementing the hypertension safety bundle and addressing common challenges with implementation.

The one-hour virtual sessions will include time for discussion and collaboration among regional hospital teams following the presentation. Nurses, physicians and other maternal health inpatient clinicians are encouraged to attend and may choose from either a morning session from 8 to 9 a.m. or an evening session from 5 to 6 p.m. on April 23, 2025. There is no cost to participate, but registration is required with the links provided.

These sessions are funded by the HRSA AIM grant (A30MC49987) as a continuation of the regional trainings conducted in Fall 2024. This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of MyMichigan Health and Michigan Health & Hospital Association. MyMichigan Health is accredited by the Michigan State Medical Society to provide continuing medical education for physicians. MyMichigan Health designates this activity for a maximum of one (1) AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™.

MHA Webinar to Review 2025 MI-AIM Eligibility Requirements

The MHA will host an informational webinar at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6 to review 2025 eligibility requirements for hospital birthing units to receive maternal health quality payments through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The funding is geared to members that are fully participating in the Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (MI-AIM) collaborative and have committed to participating in The Joint Commission’s Maternal Levels of Care Verification Program.

The webinar will provide time to answer questions and outline ongoing technical support being provided by the MHA Keystone Center. All birthing hospitals interested in pursuing the 2025 state funding opportunity are encouraged to register.

Tax Exemptions for Not-for-Profit Hospitals: Are they Worth it?

The JAMA study did not focus on a ratio; instead, it focused on quantifying the amount of state and local exemptions that should be considered by policymakers in addition to their federal exemptions.  Notably, this study quantifies wide variation in which hospitals benefit most when local, state and federal exemptions are included and proposes that policies around NFP hospital tax exemptions be delegated in part to state and local determinations (as is already the case in at least 3 states). …

The Boards and leaders in each not-for-profit hospitals must account for the tax exemptions they currently enjoy and anticipate changes that limit them in the future. These studies point clearly to that inevitability. And each must answer this question for their organization objectively: are our tax exemptions truly worth it to the communities we serve, or simply a financial maneuver to use our money elsewhere?

Fall MI AIM Regional Training Events

Member News

The Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (MI AIM) is offering training events across Michigan for inpatient maternal healthcare providers. The events, scheduled from late October to November, will focus on using quality improvement techniques for MI AIM safety bundle implementation.

The in-person events are free of charge, open to nurses, physicians and hospital maternal health teams. The trainings will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include breakfast and lunch. Time for discussion and collaboration among regional hospital teams will be provided. An overview agenda is available for attendees to view prior to the event.
