Latest AHA Trustee Insights Outlines the Board’s Role in Patient Experience

The December edition of Trustee Insights, the monthly digital package from the American Hospital Association (AHA), includes an article on the board’s role in patient experience.

The average hospital has turned over 105% of its workforce in the last five years and national patient experience results have not regained pre-pandemic performance. Employee and physician engagement, patient experience of care and community trust and confidence are often an underestimated opportunity to maximize trustee engagement. The article explains the role of trustee strategic and quality oversight for patient experience inside and outside the boardroom.

Another way to assess experience is to participate in rounding on the hospital floor. Through this intentional process, board members will learn about those who provide patient care and witness firsthand innovations, both of which provide important context when making decisions in the boardroom. This month’s article highlights examples from board members of their experience with rounding.
