News to Know – April 22, 2024

  • The results of special elections conducted April 16 restores the two-person Democratic majority in the Michigan House of Representatives with the elections of Mai Xiong (D-Warren) in the 13th House District and Peter Herzberg (D-Westland) in the 25th House District. The seats were vacated in November following mayoral election wins by former Rep. Lori Stone in Warren and former Rep. Kevin Coleman in Westland. Both Xiong and Herzberg will finish partial terms for the rest of 2024 and will have to run for re-election for the 2025-26 term. The new members are expected to be seated the week of April 22.
  • Healthcare leaders are encouraged to nominate a colleague who advances health equity for the New Detroit Just Lead: Advancing Racial Equity 2024 Leadership Award. New Detroit is a diverse coalition of 50 nonprofit, corporate and civic leaders working to achieve racial understanding and racial equity in southeast Michigan. Their work includes education, research and programs to fight racism at the personal, institutional and systemic levels. New Detroit has also worked closely with the MHA Keystone Center on Medication for Opioid Use Disorder  work to decrease opioid-related injury and death in Michigan. Five leaders will be recognized with the award. Nominations are due by 5 p.m. May 1.
