Henry Ford Kingswood Hospital Receives MHA Advancing Safe Care Award

Emily Sexton, director of hospital operations, Henry Ford Kingswood Hospital, receives the Advancing Safe Care Award.

The MHA announced the winner of its 2023 Advancing Safe Care Award June 29, honoring the dedicated team at Henry Ford Kingswood Hospital in Ferndale. The award was announced during the association’s Annual Membership Meeting.

The MHA Advancing Safe Care Award honors healthcare teams within MHA-member hospitals that demonstrate a fierce commitment to providing care to different patient populations, show evidence of an improved safety culture, lead the charge for quality improvement, and demonstrate transparency in their efforts to improve healthcare.

Henry Ford Kingswood Hospital created and maintained an inpatient psychiatric unit for patients who tested positive for COVID-19 that provided equitable inpatient psychiatric care in comparison to those patients who tested negative for COVID-19. The unit met all Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for healthcare isolation and provided patients with uninterrupted access to psychiatric providers, social work and activity therapists, group therapy and an interactive milieu. As a result of this unit, patients avoided an estimated additional stay of at least three to five days in the hospital.

Since the onset of the pandemic, 484 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 have received equitable inpatient psychiatric care through the unit. The unit allowed the hospital to provide care in an appropriate setting while avoiding increased lengths of stay and risks of adverse events that can occur with medical hospitalization. In fact, the care on the unit achieved the hospital’s highest unit rating in patient satisfaction in 2022.
