Fellowship Helps Trustees Think Critically About the Future

EIGF

EIGFStrategic thinking is a critical skill for all healthcare leaders, and the future belongs to organizations whose governing boards, working in strategic partnership with management, help envision the future and assist in discerning and framing questions the organization should ask of itself to prepare for the future. Fulfilling these duties takes knowledge, preparation and action, which is why hospital leaders should strongly consider enrolling board members in the MHA Excellence in Governance Fellowship.

Launched 20 years ago, the fellowship is a rigorous and comprehensive program delivering tools and knowledge in four strategic areas: principles of effective governance, improving quality and patient safety, building collaborative medical staff partnerships, and building strong relationships with the community and stakeholders. The fellowship is designed for both fiduciary and community governing boards, teaching trustees to think more critically about governance and healthcare issues.

Fellows meet in person four times a year at MHA headquarters in Okemos and participate in virtual sessions held in the months when fellows are not meeting in person. This format is designed to give board members the opportunity to fit this valuable learning into their busy schedules.

Graduates of the fellowship have high praise for the fellowship, as demonstrated by a video of graduates’ testimonials. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2022 – 2023 Excellence in Governance Fellowship, which will be held from October 2022 through June 2023. To further explore this one-of-a-kind offering, contact Erin Steward at the MHA.

Trustees Play Significant Role in Healthcare Recovery

EIGF

EIGFCOVID-19 has reshaped the healthcare environment. Emerging trends will have implications for years to come and the way hospitals and boards lead through recovery — be it financial, clinical or emotional — will determine the organization’s future.

The MHA Excellence in Governance Fellowship is the best choice to help prepare health organization board members to excel in performing their vital responsibilities as hospitals and health systems navigate an environment where COVID-19 is endemic. Webinar Focused on Long-Term Goal Planning and Accountability

Successful stewardship of an organization is central to the role of governance. In many boardrooms, an inward, short-term operational focus robs governing boards of their attention to external forces and long-term strategic imperatives. It takes discipline and a symbiotic relationship between the board and leadership team to keep a board’s attention on the mission, vision, strategies and goals.

The webinar You and Your Board: Creating a Synergistic Combination will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. April 27. The material will be presented by Sue Tetzlaff, who is the co-founder of Capstone Leadership Solutions and has more than 20 years of hospital leadership experience. She will share tactics for focusing on strategies, alignment and accountability to meet community needs. Board chairs, CEOs and governing board members are encouraged to register to hear about being accountable for:

  • Establishing a goal cycle that provides a cadence of purposeful activities that support and align with the organization’s strategic priorities.
  • Creating a high-functioning relationship between the CEO and the board of trustees.
  • Evaluating and elevating the individual and group performance of the board.

MHA-member hospitals can register for an unlimited number of connections per hospital/entity for $200. For more information, contact Erin Steward at the MHA.

Trustees Strategic Planning Webinar and New AHA Trustee Insights Available

Trustees of healthcare organizations can benefit from two current resources designed specifically for them.

The webinar Governance Megatrends: What is the Impact on Your Board? Is scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. Jan. 26 and will focus on relevant trends to the board and how to perform a comprehensive review of an existing strategic plan through pandemic-era eyes. Registrants will examine opportunities to improve clinical care in the post-acute setting and master new reimbursement models, as well as how to use Medicare claims data to gain valuable insights regarding referral sources’ needs. Suggested actions are paired with real stories demonstrating the value of these approaches. MHA members can register for $155 per hospital, with an unlimited number of connections within that hospital. The single connection fee does not apply to multiple sites within a health system.

The latest edition of Trustee Insights, the monthly digital package from the American Hospital Association (AHA), is now available. The January issue discusses why governing boards must understand the nuances of inequities in their communities and how to provide care and contribute to their communities in a manner that is equitable. This issue provides 10 questions that can serve as critical conversation starters for trustees to develop actions that lead to genuine, systemic and sustainable positive change for underserved populations. The expanded website and enhanced monthly e-newsletter of Trustee Insights are available through the AHA Trustee Services webpage. They are free, and do not require AHA membership.

For information about MHA trustee resources or webinars, contact Erin Steward at the MHA.

Webinar Will Help Boards Analyze Strategic Plan

Innovation in medicine and service delivery, new competitors, payer upheaval, renewed scrutiny on the social determinants of health, and more are creating instability. There is much work ahead for hospital and health system boards as organizations reassess their strategic plans, community engagement strategies, financial health and growth opportunities. The webinar Governance Megatrends: What is the Impact on Your Board? will focus on challenges and how to perform a comprehensive review of an existing strategic plan through pandemic-era eyes. It will examine essential inpatient and outpatient services, how to build investment strategies around them, and funding streams that will give hospital and health system leaders the flexibility to examine new tactics to improve services and the bottom line. The faculty will pair each step of the strategic process with real stories demonstrating the value of this approach.

The webinar is scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. EST Jan. 26. MHA members can register for $155 per hospital, with an unlimited number of connections within that hospital. The single connection fee does not apply to multiple sites within a health system. Members with questions should contact Erica Leyko at the MHA.
