Economic Impact of Healthcare
Communities across Michigan are home to local hospitals that are often the largest employers in the area. As good corporate and neighborhood citizens, hospitals invest in their communities from both inside and outside of their facilities. In addition to helping restore and support good health, healthcare-related practices and organizations provided nearly 593,000 direct jobs in Michigan in 2023, contributing $79 billion a year in wages, salaries and benefits and an additional $23.6 billion a year in tax revenue. Hospitals alone provide roughly 222,000 of those jobs and $10.7 billion a year in tax revenue, representing 44% of healthcare’s direct tax revenue and remaining the largest healthcare sector in the state.
