Artificial Intelligence
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare holds immense potential to improve patient care, enhance clinical workflows and foster innovative medical treatments. The MHA is committed to developing practical, evidence-based guidelines that prioritize patient safety and care quality through the responsible and effective use of AI technologies.
Artificial Intelligence Framework for Healthcare
The MHA Task Force on AI developed a framework with five guiding principles to ensure AI applications using generate AI models are developed and implemented responsibly within healthcare, with the needs of patients and clinicians at the forefront.
- Enhancing Patient Outcomes and Clinician Workflows
- Transparency in AI Models for Clinical Settings
- Safety of AI Tools
- Regulatory and Legal
- Fair and Impartial
To ensure the best patient care for all patients, it is critical that AI systems are trained on representative data, which involves collecting information from various demographics and continually auditing AI models to ensure impartiality.
Transparency in AI models is essential to build trust among clinicians and patients. Comprehensive documentation of AI algorithms, training datasets and validation processes allows for understanding and trust of AI systems. Informing patients about AI-assisted decisions and integrating AI explanations into the informed consent process further enhances transparency and empowers patients.
The reliability of AI tools can be ensured through clinician reviews of AI-generated decisions, alignment with established clinical guidelines and regular quality assurance processes. Leveraging existing healthcare regulatory frameworks will help AI tools meet rigorous safety and efficacy standards, while adhering to ethical and legal accountability principles, such as informed consent and data privacy.
By focusing on transparency, safety, regulatory compliance and fairness, AI can significantly enhance healthcare delivery.
