“The future depends on what we do in the present.” — Mahatma Gandhi
Campaign ads, political mailers and election headlines seem to follow us everywhere this time of year. With so much noise, it can be tempting to tune it all out. However, those of us in healthcare understand the significance of elections because we see firsthand how policy decisions affect the patients and communities we serve every day.
It’s no secret we are entering a pivotal period for healthcare.

On Jan. 1, major Medicaid changes will begin taking effect, creating new challenges for patients seeking coverage and care. At the same time, lawmakers will continue debating solutions that address workforce shortages, behavioral health access, healthcare affordability and other issues that will shape the future of care delivery for years to come.
The individuals elected this year will help determine how those conversations unfold.
During election season, it’s important to remember that access to quality healthcare is not a partisan issue and healthcare champions are not defined by party affiliation. Michigan hospitals have consistently found partners from different political backgrounds who understand the importance of strong hospitals, a stable workforce, access to behavioral health services and policies that help patients receive the care they need close to home.
The challenge is ensuring healthcare voices are at the table.
The MHA is committed to working with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who are dedicated to improving healthcare for Michigan residents. Elections remain one of the most important opportunities to help shape the future direction of healthcare policy and identify leaders who understand the critical role hospitals play in every community. As major Medicaid changes take effect and policymakers continue debating solutions to workforce shortages, behavioral health access and affordability, healthcare needs champions who understand how those decisions affect care in communities across the state.
As we enter the home stretch of this election cycle, I encourage you to stay informed, stay engaged and make your voice heard.
