Hospital Types:

Behavioral Health Facility

A hospital that provides inpatient psychiatric services for the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions under physician supervision, including active treatment programs supported by clinical and other care staff.

Birthing Hospital

A hospital that provides labor and delivery services for women, including prenatal care, childbirth and postpartum care for both the mother and newborn.

Children’s Hospital

A hospital that provides specialized care for infants, children, adolescents and young adults, with services, equipment and clinical teams designed to meet pediatric health needs.

Community Hospital

A nonfederal, short-term hospital whose facilities and services are available to the public and that provides general or specialty inpatient and outpatient care to meet the needs of its community.

Critical Access Hospital (CAH)

A hospital that maintains no more than 25 acute care beds. CAHs must be located more than 35 miles (or 15 miles by mountainous terrain or secondary roads) from the nearest hospital – unless designated by a state as a Necessary Provider prior to 2006.

Long Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH)

A hospital that provides acute inpatient care for patients with complex medical conditions who need a longer hospital stay, typically averaging more than 25 days, before returning home or moving to another care setting.

Public Hospital

A hospital owned or operated by a governmental entity, such as a city, county or state, that provides medical services to the public and often serves as a safety-net provider for the community.

Rehabilitation Hospital

A hospital that provides intensive inpatient rehabilitation services for patients recovering from a serious illness, injury or surgery, including coordinated medical care, rehabilitation nursing and therapy services.

Teaching Hospital

A hospital affiliated with a medical school or other health professions education program that provides patient care while training medical students, residents, fellows and other healthcare professionals.
