Michigan WIC Announces Infant Formula Contract Change

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) recently announced that Mead Johnson & Co. will become the infant formula provider for the Michigan Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program beginning Nov. 1. The current contract with Abbott expires Oct. 31.

WIC formula benefits will transition from Similac products to nutritionally comparable Enfamil products. Standard contract formulas will remain available without a medical request for partially breastfed and fully formula-fed infants through 12 months old. Medical requests for standard noncontract formulas will not be approved when a comparable contract formula is available.

Special formulas will remain available for infants with qualifying medical conditions, and submission of the Michigan Special Formula/Food Request form to the local WIC agency is required. Hospitals and health care professionals serving pregnant and postpartum patients, infants and children are encouraged to review the product transition chart and help affected families prepare for the change.
