The MHA recently submitted comments to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) and the Office of Rural Prosperity regarding the proposed 2027 Rural Development Fund guidelines, encouraging the state to recognize healthcare infrastructure as a key driver of rural economic development.

The MHA emphasized in its comments that investing in rural healthcare infrastructure improves access, strengthens local economies, grows the workforce and improves community vitality.

The MHA urged LEO to prioritize Rural Development Fund investments that support:

• Modernization and renovation of aging healthcare facilities and critical infrastructure.
• Broadband expansion and digital connectivity to advance telehealth and other innovative care delivery models.
• Healthcare workforce recruitment, retention, training and housing initiatives.
• Regional partnerships that improve healthcare access, community services and economic resilience.
• Technology, equipment and operational infrastructure investments that help rural providers meet evolving community needs.

The MHA also highlighted that sustained investment in rural healthcare infrastructure helps attract businesses and families, supports stable employment and improves quality of life for residents across Michigan.
