The MHA hosted approximately 75 hospital leaders from across Michigan for the 2026 Small and Rural Advocacy Day Sept. 16 at the Michigan State Capitol.
The day began with a brief program featuring Michael E. Shepherd, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Members then participated in more than 45 meetings with lawmakers and legislative staff to share how rural hospitals protect access to care, support local jobs and serve as community anchors. Conversations focused on strengthening healthcare workforce pipelines, maintaining Medicaid and coverage stability, improving the distribution of Rural Health Transformation Program* funding, protecting the 340B program, opposing broad facility fee restrictions and continuing investments that support the long-term sustainability of rural healthcare services.
The MHA thanks the hospital leaders, lawmakers and legislative staff who participated and shared their perspectives on the essential role rural hospitals play in communities across Michigan.
