MHA Roundtable Highlights Growth of Hospital-Based Peer Recovery Programs

The MHA hosted peer recovery coaches (PRCs) and substance use disorder professionals on Aug. 13 for a roundtable discussion about hospital-based PRC programs. Each participating organization received funding support for the PRC program through a Michigan Legislature appropriation in fiscal year 2025.

Representatives from Aspire Rural Health System, Bronson Healthcare, Corewell Health East, Henry Ford Health, Munson Healthcare and Trinity Health Ann Arbor shared lessons learned, successes and recommendations from launching or expanding their programs. Discussions underscored the growing impact of peer recovery services in connecting individuals to treatment, keeping them engaged in recovery and reducing stigma within healthcare settings.

In addition to operational considerations for hospital-based PRC programs, participants explored opportunities to strengthen referral pathways, expand services, increase provider awareness of the PRC role and better support patients and peer professionals. Participants also emphasized the need for sustainable funding, workforce development, stronger statewide collaboration and policies that support the long-term sustainability of peer recovery services.

The roundtable also addressed emerging substances, including kratom and synthetic 7-OH products, to keep providers informed on the evolving substance use landscape. The event concluded with a discussion on Medicaid reimbursement for PRC services provided in hospital emergency and outpatient department settings. Member organizations are encouraged to submit public comments to the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services by Aug. 31.
