As the statewide voice for Michigan hospitals, the MHA has a responsibility to ensure policymakers understand how their decisions affect healthcare access, affordability and the ability of hospitals to meet the needs of the communities they serve. Firsthand perspectives from hospital leaders provide important context about how policy decisions affect care delivery in communities across Michigan, which is why the MHA hosts advocacy events throughout the year, creating opportunities for members to share their experiences directly with lawmakers.
Recognizing the unique challenges facing Michigan’s small and rural hospitals, the association recently established the MHA Center of Rural Excellence to provide dedicated support and strengthen our rural-focused advocacy efforts. The center helps elevate rural health priorities and ensure the voices of rural hospitals are represented in policy discussions. The MHA Small and Rural Advocacy Day, taking place this week, is a natural extension of that mission, bringing hospital leaders, trustees and healthcare providers from across the state to Lansing for meetings with lawmakers.
Those conversations are more important than ever. Rural hospitals are often the largest employer in their communities and serve as economic engines, trusted healthcare providers and critical community anchors. Yet, many continue to face significant pressures, including workforce shortages, rising supply and drug costs, and ongoing challenges to sustaining essential services close to home for rural residents.
The MHA’s advocacy efforts are strongest when they are informed by the experiences of our members. Lawmakers can review reports and one-pagers, but hearing directly from hospital and community leaders provides a perspective that cannot be replicated. Through the Center of Rural Excellence and events like the MHA Small and Rural Advocacy Day, we are helping ensure lawmakers understand not only the policy implications of their decisions, but also the real-world impact those decisions have on hospitals, patients and communities across Michigan.
As we continue advocating for legislation that strengthens hospitals and protects access to care, we remain committed to amplifying the voices of our members and advancing solutions that support the long-term sustainability of healthcare in every corner of the state. Rural hospitals are essential to Michigan’s health and economic vitality, and we are proud to stand alongside them in Lansing this week and throughout the year.
Advocacy does not begin and end with a single event.
