The Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) recently launched the Michigan Work and Exemptions Screening Tool (MI WEST) to help individuals navigate new federally required Medicaid work requirements taking effect Jan. 1, 2027.
MI WEST is an interactive online tool that asks questions to help identify whether an individual must meet the new requirements, qualifies for an exemption or is already engaged in qualifying activities. The screening tool is publicly available on the MDHHS website and can be used by anyone — including current enrollees, new applicants or community organizations supporting individuals seeking to maintain or enroll in Healthy Michigan Plan coverage. The MDHHS emphasizes that the tool is informational only and is not an official application or determination of renewal.
Approximately 625,000 Michiganders are enrolled in Healthy Michigan Plan coverage and could be affected by the new requirements, although many are expected to qualify for exemptions. Additional information about the requirements, exemptions, qualifying activities and more can be found on the MDHHS website.
