MDHHS Accepting Applications for Behavioral Internship Stipends

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is accepting applications for the Michigan Behavioral Health Internship Stipend Program, which provides eligible student interns with up to $15,000 to offset educational and living expenses. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. ET Aug. 31.

The program aims to increase the number of qualified behavioral health professionals serving children in Michigan. Eligible students must be pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree leading to one of the following behavioral health professions:

  • Behavior analysis
  • Marriage or family therapy
  • Social work
  • Professional counseling
  • Psychology

This round of funding is expected to support approximately 72 students.

Eligibility Requirements

Applications must:

  • Be a current Michigan resident.
  • Be enrolled in an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree program in the United States.
  • Have secured an unpaid internship required by their degree program.
  • Complete at least 80 internship hours on or after Aug. 1, 2026.
  • Provide services to children, youth or transition-aged youth during the internship.
  • Intend to work at a public behavioral health facility after graduation.

Complete required program surveys and evaluation activities.

Internships must be located at or contracted with a community mental health agency, prepaid inpatient health plan, tribal health center, Indian Health Service, tribally operated facility or program or urban Indian clinic. Private practice and public-school placements are not eligible.

Stipend Distribution

The stipend is a one-time award paid directly to the student in two installments. Award amounts are based on the number of required internship hours:

  • 80-200 hours: $5,000
  • 201-400 hours: $10,000
  • 401-600 hours: $15,000
