LARA Schedules Public Hearing on Proposed Psychiatric Hospital Licensing Rules

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) convened a stakeholder workgroup in late 2024 to modernize licensing requirements for psychiatric hospitals and psychiatric units. The MHA staff and several member hospitals participated in the workgroup and provided feedback throughout the development of the drafted rules.

The proposed rules would replace the current regulatory framework and align licensing requirements with contemporary behavioral health practices, patient safety standards and operational expectations.

LARA has scheduled a public hearing on the drafted rules for 10:30 a.m. Aug. 4 at the G. Mennen Williams Building in Lansing.

Public comments will be accepted through Aug. 5. The MHA encourages members to review the draft rules and submit comments to help inform the final version. The MHA plans to attend the hearing and will continue monitoring the rulemaking process.

Additional information, including the draft rules and instructions for submitting comments, is available on LARA’s website.

Members with questions may contact Kelsey Ostergren at the MHA.
