Hospitals Help: Pine Rest Program Offers Support, Healing Through Pregnancy and Postpartum

Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD) and postpartum depression are among the most common complications of childbirth, often affecting moms with young children and women who’ve suffered a pregnancy loss.

The Mother and Baby Day Program at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services is a short-term, intensive care model that focuses on treating pregnant women and those up to three years postpartum who need support.

PMAD can include depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and/or psychosis during pregnancy and the early years following childbirth. Signs and symptoms often look like excessive worrying or nervousness, difficulty concentrating, intrusive thoughts, hopelessness, sleep difficulties, irritability, fatigue and more.

“We want new and expectant moms who are struggling to know that they’re not alone,” said Alissa Moseley, RN-BC, clinical services manager of Pine Rest’s Partial Hospitalization Programs. “This program is designed to remove the stigma of asking for help and create an environment that fosters hope and healing.”

Pine Rest’s multidisciplinary team of experts work with patients to establish treatment goals, strategies and a comprehensive aftercare plan. The program also includes a nursery available for infants up to eight months of age and childcare services for those who need it through a partnership with the Safe Families Program.

Open Monday through Friday, the Mother and Baby Day Program also offers peer-to-peer support through daily group education and therapy sessions led by a licensed clinician. Pine Rest also offers inpatient care for those in crisis or who are experiencing severe symptoms.

“I came very pessimistic and afraid that I would just feel worse and even more confused,” said one program participant. “I have learned so much from everyone and feel so grateful.”

Since 2012, Pine Rest teams have helped thousands of women and girls (ages 14+) avoid hospitalization and receive timely, lifesaving care that reduces the long-term effects of perinatal and postpartum conditions.

“When I came here, I felt so alone and helpless, but now I feel hopeful and know that I will get better,” said another participant.
