For rural hospitals, serving communities means finding innovative ways to ensure patients can access care despite the challenges of distance and transportation. With this in mind, the teams at Munising Memorial Hospital are proud to serve local Upper Peninsula residents with their travelling Mobile Health Unit.

The state-of-the-art, 37-foot mobile clinic provides convenient access to wellness visits, routine doctor appointments, blood work, preventive screenings, EKGs, retinal scans and physicals for local employees, students and service workers.
“As a critical access hospital serving rural Michigan, our teams are committed to keeping essential services close to home — even if that means going beyond our four walls,” said Wendy Frush, RN, chief executive officer, Munising Memorial Hospital. “Meeting patients where they are is one of the many ways we help keep our communities healthy, connected and vibrant.”
The mobile clinic team began services in May 2026 and has since cared for more than 50 patients across the Grand Marais, Trenary, Chatham and KI Saywer region with support from the Superior Health Foundation, Upper Peninsula Health Plan and Homeward Health.
“I wouldn’t have gone to get checked out by a doctor if the bus wasn’t in my town,” said one patient after receiving care at the mobile health clinic. “It’s very easy and a great service to our community.”
Munising Memorial Hospital was first established in 1910 along Lake Superior. While there’s been instrumental changes over the years, the hospital remains a community pillar for care and one of the largest employers in Alger County.
