The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently updated the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) participation and user agreements. The MHA Keystone Center encourages member hospitals participating in NHSN to electronically accept the updated agreements by June 1, 2027, to continue submitting data.
When logging into NHSN, facility administrators will be prompted to review and electronically accept the updated agreements. Acceptance is required once per organization ID (OrgID) and applies to all NHSN components enrolled under the OrgID.
Hospitals that do not accept the updated agreement by the deadline will be unable to submit data to NHSN until it is accepted. Access to historical data and analyses will remain available.
The updated agreement strengthens protections for patient-level data and adds a stated purpose supporting data sharing with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Strategic Preparedness and to support healthcare preparedness and emergency response activities. The update does not add new NHSN reporting requirements.
Members are encouraged to review the NHSN guidance document for details on the updated agreements and acceptance process. Questions may be directed to the MHA Keystone Center.
