AMN Report Highlights Physician Recruitment Trends

MHA Endorsed Business Partner AMN Healthcare recently released the 2026 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives, outlining national trends shaping physician and advanced practice provider (APP) recruitment and retention. The report emphasizes that healthcare organizations must pair competitive compensation with workplace culture, flexibility and professional growth opportunities to build a sustainable workforce.

“Our experience working with AMN Physician Solutions has been extremely positive,” said Jeremiah J. Hodshire, president, CEO, Hillsdale Hospital. “They have been a trusted partner in helping us recruit and place providers at our rural hospital, which serves the Hillsdale community and surrounding areas where attracting qualified physicians can be challenging. Their understanding of our needs, responsiveness and commitment to finding the right fit for our organization have made a meaningful difference. We value the relationship we’ve built with their team and appreciate the role they have played in strengthening our medical staff and expanding access to primary care and specialty care at Hillsdale Hospital.”

Key takeaways from the report are outlined below.

Recruitment Strategies Must Reflect Changing Priorities

Healthcare organizations continue to compete for a limited supply of physician talent across many specialties. While demand remains high, physician expectations are evolving. Compensation alongside organizational culture, work-life balance, scheduling flexibility and career growth require employers to take a broader approach to recruitment.

Compensation Remains Important, but Retention Requires More

Competitive compensation remains central to recruitment, but physicians also seek practice environments that support professional fulfillment, administrative efficiency and personal well-being.

Retention Begins with the Physician Experience

Engagement, mentorship, leadership development and effective onboarding can strengthen workforce stability and reduce the cost and disruption of repeated recruitment.

A Sustainable Workforce Requires Multiple Strategies

The report highlights several approaches healthcare organizations can use to support recruitment and retention including:

  • Competitive total rewards: Align compensation and benefits with market expectations.
  • Work-life integration: Offer flexible scheduling and resources that support well-being.
  • Professional growth: Create pathways for leadership development and career advancement.
  • Strategic workforce planning: Anticipate future needs that shape recruitment pipelines.

Together, these strategies can strengthen recruitment, improve retention and help hospitals meet the healthcare needs of their communities.
