Virtual Nurse Preceptor Academy Supports New Employee Training and Retention

By using resources that prevent or alleviate transitional hardship and enhance new nurses’ clinical reasoning, preceptors can help improve new graduate nurse retention and patient outcomes.

The MHA and the Michigan Health Council’s standardized, validated Nurse Preceptor Academy is a virtual training program for nurses and allied health professionals to acclimate new nurses, students and employees to the rigors of the hospital environment and validate competence. Modules focus on the preceptor’s role, new nurse learning needs and legal considerations.

The MHA and the Michigan Health Council also offer a Clinical Faculty Academy (CFA), a virtual training program preparing nurses for the role as clinical instructors. The CFA education modules consist of clinical evaluation concepts and processes, clinical evaluation tools and conducting pre-clinical and post-clinical conferences, among other concepts.

The CFA and the NPA are offered free of charge. To learn more about these offerings, contact Ana Hornburg at the Michigan Health Council. Members with questions can contact Erin Steward.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, healthcare workers are five times more likely to suffer a workplace violence injury than workers overall. This affects workers not just physically, but mentally, contributing to burnout and worsening turnover.

The virtual training TEAM® Essentials: Recognizing and Managing Aggression will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Jan. 28 and is designed for healthcare workers and volunteers who may encounter angry, disruptive or potentially dangerous individuals. The training will teach participants how to protect themselves and others by applying the TEAM® Aggression CycleSM techniques to verbally de-escalate and manage volatile situations. An organization registration fee of $100 allows for multiple employees and volunteers in one hospital to take advantage of this training.

The faculty for this event is an experienced law enforcement professional with HSS, an MHA Endorsed Business Partner organization with expertise in physical security and emergency management.

Virtual Events Focus on Active Shooter, Workplace Violence Prevention and Response

Aggressive behavior and violence are becoming a too frequent reality, whether it is expressed as violence against caregivers or gun violence in the community. The MHA is holding two virtual events to assist members with these challenges.

The member forum Active Shooter Prevention and Response will be offered virtually from noon to 1 p.m. EST Jan. 21 and will teach participants to better detect a potential active shooter situation and actions they can take in an active shooter incident, like Run-Hide-Fight response techniques. The member forum is free of charge.
