The Keckley Report

Paul KeckleyKeckley Poll: Which Institution is Best Positioned to Solve the Health System’s Flaws?

“In The Keckley Poll conducted November 13-16, 2023 among 817 U.S. adults, 69% agreed that “the health system is fundamentally flawed and needs major change.” This view is held even more among working age adults, women and those in good/fair health and less by seniors and those in poor health. …

These data confirm a public view that the status quo is unsatisfactory to the vast majority of Americans. While each of the 5 institutions asserts its unique role and value proposition in the scheme of U.S. healthcare, none stands out for its differentiated commitment to the greater good. …

This polling suggests it’s time for the industry to consider the public we serve instead of ourselves. Some do it better than others today, but lacking a systemic strategy engaging all sectors to address the health and wellbeing of the entire population affordably, incrementalism will continue, sectarianism will escalate and the system effectiveness will erode. Trustee Webinars Focus on Healthcare Trends and Advocacy Strategies

Recent media headlines declare hospitals are in reasonably good shape financially due to pandemic funding, Medicare and insurer overpayments and price-gauging. While hospital leaders have data proving extreme financial pressures, the cumulative effect of this press is confusion and distrust of hospitals. The MHA Board Governance Education webinar series will provide examples of how to share facts and be an effective advocate on financial viability and other areas.

The April 19 webinar outlines the trends affecting current and future strategic plans, the May 9 webinar teaches trustees techniques for effectively communicating with stakeholders on key issues and the May 23 webinar discusses ways to build trust and engagement within the community. All webinars are from noon to 1 p.m. EST and members can register for one or all three webinars.

The series is generously sponsored by HPS, an associate member of the MHA and free of charge to MHA members.

Members with questions about registration should contact Erica Leyko at the MHA.
