The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) recently released a video series to help providers better understand the regulations for protected health information (PHI) and whether an individual must provide consent before the information is shared. The new video series, commissioned by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund and developed by Altarum, is designed to complement the PHI consent tool created through that partnership. The videos will help stakeholders understand how to navigate the tool, including complex scenarios such as PHI sharing in the cases of domestic violence, substance use information and minors’ PHI.
The video series and the updated PHI consent tool, which includes references to the most recent legislative changes, including the CARES Act, are available on the MDHHS website and review various scenarios to help providers determine whether consent is needed.
Providers are encouraged to join the Michigan PHI Consent Help listserv to receive updated PHI information as it becomes available. Providers needing assistance with the tool or videos may contact the Michigan PHI Consent Helpline. Members with questions on PHI regulations should contact Vickie Kunz at the MHA.
