Michigan Green Healthcare Award

Celebrating Sustainability in Michigan

Nomination Deadline: 5 p.m. Aug. 16, 2019
Award Presentation: Oct. 10, 2019

The MHA, through its Michigan Green Healthcare Committee (MGHC), works to establish a framework for Michigan’s healthcare sector to improve the health and well-being of the state’s ecology and its citizens. As part of that effort, the Michigan Green Healthcare Award was established in 2014 to recognize organizations and individuals who have had a significant impact on sustainability within the healthcare sector.

Those eligible for the award include hospitals and health systems, long-term care facilities, sustainability officers, dieticians, clinicians, engineers, architects, pharmacists, environmental services personnel and companies, food and nutrition managers and organizations, maintenance managers, energy coordinators, business partners, governmental agencies, public health professionals and departments, nonprofits, and others with a passion for reducing the environmental footprint of healthcare.

One of the 2019 awards will recognize an organization (hospital, long-term-care facility, cancer center, university medical center, healthcare system, etc.) that made a broad impact and sustainability gain for the organization and its community during the past 12 months.

The second award winner will be an individual: a “hometown hero” in sustainability and green healthcare.  This is a person who demonstrates a vision and passion at a group, department, or personal level and inspires others to make a difference.

Take a moment to contemplate who demonstrates leadership and foresight in green healthcare.  Think of those who help safeguard and improve sustainable practices in patient care, delivery of services, or reducing the bottom line for their healthcare employer and/or is a tireless advocate for reducing healthcare’s environmental impact and engaging others to do the same.  This is an opportunity to recognize hard work and dedication, as well as to shine a light on deserving individuals and organizations in healthcare.

Nominations are judged on a 100-point system that is divided among the following three categories of criteria.

Innovation & Engagement (35 points)

  • A description of how the nominee has demonstrated leadership through new and different approaches and has provided advanced knowledge to the promotion of sustainable strategies.

Impact & Results (35 points)

  • A description of how the nominee’s activities have improved the sustainability of the healthcare system and/or community during the past 12 months.
  • Specify the nominee’s strategy for reaching the goals set for these activities and how results were measured.

Commitment (30 points)

  • A description of the nominee’s ongoing and any future pledge to greening the healthcare system or community.

Special consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate forward progress in:

  • Reducing energy consumption

  • Safer chemicals
  • Environmental preferable purchasing
  • Leadership that is engaged in environmental sustainability
  • Submission must include the nomination form and supporting narrative that includes the duration of the nominee’s sustainability activity.
