Sept. 1 Deadline Approaching for Wage and Occupational Mix Data Revisions
Posted on July 21, 2017
Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) must receive all hospital requests for changes to their wage and occupational mix data by Sept. 1. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is using wage and hours data reported on hospital cost reports ending between Sept. 30, 2015, and Sept. 29, 2016, to develop the fiscal year (FY) 2019 Medicare area wage index.
The Medicare wage index adjusts Medicare payments for services to reflect regional variations in wages and affects up to 70 percent of Medicare payments. The index applies to Medicare inpatient, outpatient, and post-acute care services, including skilled nursing facilities, inpatient rehabilitation facilities and inpatient psychiatric facilities. The occupational mix adjustment is used to adjust the area wage index for differences in staffing levels.
Hospitals also have until Sept. 1 to request revisions to data submitted on the calendar year 2016 occupational mix survey, which was due to MACs by July 3. The results from the 2016 occupational mix survey will be used to adjust the Medicare wage index in FYs 2019, 2020 and 2021.
The MHA hosted two webinars earlier this year to assist hospitals with accurate data reporting for both the wage index and occupational mix survey. Members with questions should contact Vickie Kunz at the MHA.
