The Detroit News Publishes Vaccination Op-Ed from Partnership for Michigan's Health

Posted on July 10, 2020

The Detroit News published a joint op-ed on vaccinations July 9 from the Partnership for Michigan’s Health, comprised of the MHA, the Michigan State Medical Society and the Michigan Osteopathic Association.

Brian Peters, chief executive officer, MHA; Jeffrey Postlewaite, DO, president, Michigan Osteopathic Association; and S. Bobby Mukkamala, MD, president, Michigan State Medical Society, co-authored the op-ed.

Due to declining vaccination rates as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the leaders of the three organizations call on the state Legislature and Gov. Whitmer to support vaccination public education efforts, specifically through the “I Vaccinate” campaign.

"Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show Michigan’s vaccination rates for children ages 18 and younger have dropped more than 20%, going from about two-thirds to less than half of children. This alarming decline has left Michigan communities vulnerable to outbreaks of other potentially deadly illnesses.

"Hospitals, doctors and public health experts are warning that like our economy, Michigan’s health care system is ill-prepared to handle two major disease outbreaks at once. 'I Vaccinate' helps people learn about and access vaccines that check the spread of additional communicable diseases that could strike at the same time as a second wave of COVID-19."
