Healthcare Professionals to Public: Stay Home

Posted on March 24, 2020

The American Hospital Association, the American Medical Association and the American Nurses Association sent an open letter to the American public March 24 urging them to stay at home to help slow the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The national associations asked the public to give healthcare workers and others on the front lines a fighting chance to take on the immense challenge of the pandemic by staying at home and avoiding contact with others. If people must leave their homes, they are asked to stay at least six feet from other individuals, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The request echoes Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Executive Order 2020-21, issued March 23, which states that residents must remain in their homes unless they are seeking medical care, obtaining necessary goods like groceries and gas, or are working in essential business functions that protect or sustain the lives of Michigan residents, such as those in the healthcare setting. The governor summarizes the order as “Stay Home, Stay Safe.”

“The MHA and Michigan’s hospitals are in complete agreement with Gov. Whitmer and the national associations for healthcare providers on this matter,” said MHA CEO Brian Peters. “Without the cooperation of everyone in the state, the fight against COVID-19 will be unnecessarily difficult. We urge Michiganders to stay at home as much as possible.”
