Workshop Explores Role of Governing Boards in Safety Accountability

Posted on December 18, 2019

Governing boards for healthcare organizations have unique responsibilities for ensuring quality within their facilities. The healthcare trustee workshop Linking Quality to Strategy and Operations will provide insights into those responsibilities and how to meet them. The workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 23 at MHA headquarters in Okemos.

Linking Quality to Strategy and OperationsA troubled culture invites cynicism and lack of candor about patient care problems and safety concerns. This can be dangerous, as quality and safety concerns may go unreported, potentially resulting in patient harm events. The key challenges for the governing board are to assure that information about patient care and staff concerns is being shared freely with the board; that areas requiring cultural improvements are promptly identified, with actions and accountabilities developed and tracked; and that the improvements result in better quality and safety outcomes that can be sustained over time.

The workshop will help board members realize the roles transparency, teamwork and honesty play in performance improvement and how to establish clear and dependable monitoring systems that result in a culture that weathers adversity more effectively. This comprehensive workshop will share strategies to create a “just culture” around failure, think predictively and hold others accountable for cultural improvement.

The registration fee $195 per person. The registration form and questions about the workshop should be directed to Erica Leyko at the MHA. For more information about MHA trustee resources, contact Erin Steward at the MHA.
