Leadership Corner: MHA Keystone Center 2020 Data Strategy

Posted on December 05, 2019

The Leadership Corner features monthly updates from the MHA leadership team. The updates will provide new insights to patient safety and quality as well as information obtained from healthcare workshops and conferences across the country.

Renée SmiddyRenée Smiddy, MSBA, director of research and performance measurement, Michigan Health & Hospital Association Service Corporation, discusses the MHA Keystone Center’s data strategy for 2020.

The MHA Keystone Center is entering an exciting time in its data evolution as we begin to position ourselves to become Michigan’s premier healthcare data collaborative that harnesses the power of informed data partnerships to improve healthcare quality.

As part of this journey, we will be launching a new data platform to support this mission in January of 2020. KeyMetrics will build upon the years of experience the MHA Keystone Center has gained by supporting national collaboratives and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services quality and improvement contracts.

The KeyMetrics platform is based on key principals:

  • Flexible to grow and evolve to accommodate changes in data and scale in size.
  • Data collection from a multitude of sources and will allow entities to benchmark based on a variety of attributes.
  • Data reporting presented through Tableau, which will provide users more control over viewing and consuming data.
  • Federal Information Security Modernization Act and Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program compliant cloud-hosted data repository.

KeyMetrics is the first step in our 2020 data strategy to deliver valuable insights as we collectively work to improve the health and well-being of individuals in the communities where we work and live.

The MHA Keystone Data System (KDS), will be retired at the end of the Hospital Improvement Innovation Network contract in March of 2020, and KeyMetrics will support all new collaboratives after that.
