MHA Chief Innovation Officer & Senior Vice President Laura Appel was interviewed for a Sept. 24 MLive article about the critical need to improve access to care for behavioral health patients in Michigan.
Appel addressed the work hospitals are doing to expand services and the impact the influx of psychiatric patients has had on hospital emergency departments across the state. "Most emergency departments are familiar with this challenge now. But it can be disruptive. It can take a lot of time away from other caregiving. It can lead to injuries for hospital staff,” she said.
The MHA is working with community partners to develop solutions, including advocating for improved funding for behavioral health services and participating in an effort to identify the root causes that prevent timely access to inpatient psychiatric care. The Michigan Inpatient Psychiatric Access Discussion, known as MIPAD, published a long list of recommendations last year, with work underway to address barriers patients and providers encounter to accessing care.
