MHA, Beaumont Health Join I Vaccinate Event to Encourage Childhood Vaccinations

Posted on August 16, 2019

Letha Martin, BSN, RN, immunization action plan coordinator, Oakland County Health Division, speaks during the news conference, joined on stage by officials from the state of Michigan, Franny Strong Foundation, MHA and Beaumont Health. The MHA participated in a news conference Aug. 15 with the I Vaccinate campaign, the Franny Strong Foundation, Michigan health officials and Beaumont Health leadership at the Beaumont Teen Health Center at River Rouge High School to urge families to vaccinate their children during this back-to-school season. As Michigan continues to battle the country’s most severe measles outbreak in decades, parents must keep their children up to date on immunizations to protect not only their loved ones, but their communities as well.

With record low immunization rates reported over the last several years, choosing to not immunize children impacts both their immunity to preventable diseases and herd immunity, or immunity of the entire community around them. That is why on Aug. 12, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a Certificate of Proclamation declaring August 2019 as Immunization Awareness Month across Michigan. The goal for Immunization Awareness Month is to continue public education on the safety of vaccinations to stop the spread of contagious and avoidable diseases.
