Philip H. McCorkle Jr.Funeral services were held July 11 for Philip H. McCorkle Jr., who passed away July 2 after battling cancer. In 2013, McCorkle retired as president and CEO of Mercy Health Saint Mary’s, Grand Rapids, as the hospital’s longest serving CEO since its establishment in 1893.

McCorkle served on the MHA Board of Trustees from 2005 through 2011 and on the MHA Executive Committee during the 2007-2008 program year. He also lent his expertise to the MHA Data Policy Committee and the MHA Legislative Policy Panel. He received an MHA Meritorious Service Award, the association’s highest honor, in 2013.

During McCorkle’s tenure at Saint Mary’s, the hospital opened the Lacks Cancer Center, the Hauenstein Neuroscience Center, and the outpatient campus Saint Mary’s Southwest. Prior to his retirement in 2013, a merger was finalized between Saint Mary’s Health Care and Trinity Health’s Mercy Health Partners, Muskegon, resulting in the health system Mercy Health.

Those wishing to commemorate McCorkle’s life may send contributions to the Saint Mary’s Foundation or Hospice of Michigan, where he was a board member.
