MHA Statement on House Bill 4397 Vote: "This Bill Stinks"

Posted on May 09, 2019

The following statement can be attributed to Brian Peters, CEO of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association.

Brian PetersIt’s a sad day in Lansing when legislators are celebrating jamming through a bill on a serious and complex issue under the cover of darkness. There has been no chance for their constituents, and even the representatives themselves, to review this legislation. But that’s what House Republicans did tonight when they passed House Bill 4397. To be frank, this bill stinks. The changes the House made to Senate Bill 1 continue to let insurers off the hook and pad their pocketbooks. The Legislature should start over and take the thoughtful approach they claimed they would from the beginning. Michigan families deserve actual long-term meaningful rate relief and coverage that will protect them in the case of an accident.
