MHA Keystone Center PSO Annual Meeting Focused on Workplace Safety
Posted on March 08, 2019
Clinical staff from across Michigan participated in the annual meeting of the MHA Keystone Center Patient Safety Organization (PSO) March 6 in Dearborn.
The meeting’s keynote address was presented by nationally recognized speaker Monica Cooke, RNC, MA, CPHQ, CPHRM, FASHRM, chief executive officer at Quality Plus Solutions, LLC, a healthcare risk consulting firm based in the Baltimore area. She discussed the current state of violence in the hospital setting, particularly patient-to-staff violence in the emergency department. She also shared real-life examples, identified common risk factors for violence and aggression in patients, and outlined several strategies for mitigating harm, including creating safe rooms in hospitals for active shooter situations.
Other speakers discussed how to mitigate behavioral health incidents, ways to reduce burnout, prevention strategies for falls, and the importance of debriefing workplace safety issues. Speakers emphasized that the debriefing sessions, even if they last only a few minutes, are critical for allowing staff to discuss what happened and how to prevent similar situations in the future.
