Outpatient Safety Highlighted During Patient Safety Awareness Week

Posted on March 01, 2019

Patient Safety Awareness WeekPatient Safety Awareness Week (PSAW) is celebrated annually and hosted by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). The observance highlights the importance of patient safety, celebrates the progress being made to improve care and focuses on pertinent issues facing healthcare teams.

This year’s PSAW will take place March 10-16 and focus on diagnostic errors and outpatient safety, particularly in the ambulatory setting. Hospitals are encouraged to celebrate PSAW by promoting various IHI activities within their organizations and social media and by sharing their own success stories.

Below are ways hospitals can celebrate PSAW:

  • Nominate an improvement team for the MHA Advancing Safe Care Award. The award focuses on four key issues – safety culture, quality improvement, transparency and health equity.

  • Recognize an individual or team from an MHA Keystone Center Patient Safety Organization hospital that has demonstrated a commitment to preventing patient or staff harm by submitting a nomination for the MHA Keystone Center Speak-up! Award.

  • Watch the IHI’s free webcast, Advancing Patient Safety Beyond the Hospital, from 2 to 3 p.m. EDT March 13.

  • Participate in a Twitter chat hosted by the IHI, in conjunction with the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine, from noon to 1 p.m. EDT March 14.

  • Share improvement activities and success stories related to outpatient care on social media using the hashtags #patientsafety and #PSAW19.

The MHA Keystone Center will share information on its webpage and social media channels on Twitter and LinkedIn during PSAW that will highlight how it connects and educates its members to improve the patient experience, reduce infections and harm, and create a culture of safe care. Members with questions should contact the MHA Keystone Center.
