Webinar Materials Available on Medicare Readmissions and Hospital-Acquired Conditions Reduction Programs

Posted on February 08, 2019

The MHA and DataGen conducted a webinar Feb. 6 that provided an overview of the Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) readmission reduction (RRP) and hospital acquired condition (HAC) reduction programs. A recording and materials are available for member use.

These programs were mandated by the Affordable Care Act, with the RRP beginning in FY 2013 and the HAC program taking effect in FY 2015.  Unlike the Medicare value-based purchasing (VBP) program, which is budget-neutral nationally, these programs are not budget-neutral, with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services benefitting from hospital payment cuts for these programs. In addition, unlike the VBP program where individual hospitals can earn more or less than their program contribution or remain whole, the RRP and HAC reduction programs do not provide an upside opportunity, with remaining whole the best outcome for an individual hospital. Following the release of updated data on Hospital Compare, the MHA provides hospitals with an estimate of their RRP and HAC reduction program performance.
