State Legislative Committees, Procedures Set
Posted on January 18, 2019
The 2019-2020 state Legislature is underway, as committee assignments in both chambers have been released and bills are being introduced.
In the Senate, Sen. Curt VanderWall (R-Ludington) will chair the Senate Health Policy and Human Services Committee, and Sen. Peter MacGregor (R-Rockford) will chair the Appropriations Subcommittee on Community Health and Human Services.
For the House, Rep. Hank Vaupel (R-Fowlerville) will lead the House Health Policy Committee again this term, and Rep. Mary Whiteford (R-Casco Township) will chair the House Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee. Additionally, Speaker Lee Chatfield (R-Levering) has appointed members to a Select Committee on Reducing Car Insurance Rates (see related article) that will be chaired by Rep. Jason Wentworth (R-Clare).
There will also be a new process for reporting bills out of the Michigan House this year, as Chatfield has announced four strategic committees that must review all bills passed by other committees before they reach the floor. This new structure is meant to act as an additional funnel to limit the number of bills that can be brought up for a vote. Those four committees are:
- Appropriations, chaired by Rep. Shane Hernandez (R-Port Huron).
- Ways and Means, chaired by Rep. Brandt Iden (R-Kalamazoo).
- Government Operations, chaired by Rep. Jason Sheppard (R-Temperance).
- Judiciary, chaired by Rep. Graham Filler (R-DeWitt).
Full lists of committees and their members in both the House and the Senate are available online. For more information, contact Adam Carlson at the MHA.
