Bridge Magazine: Pregnant in rural Michigan? Fill up your gas tank for delivery day

Laura Appel, the MHA’s senior vice president and chief innovation officer, spoke with Bridge Magazine about the number of counties in rural areas of Michigan without obstetric care at local hospitals.

The article highlighted the importance of access to OB-GYN healthcare for mothers and babies in the U.P. and the northern Lower Peninsula and the continued importance of funding for Michigan’s rural hospitals. Appel also discussed the challenges rural hospitals have with recruiting specialist healthcare providers.

“You can’t have one (OB-GYN) on call 24 hours a day,” she said.
