  • Saturday, Dec. 15, is the deadline for open enrollment through Michigan’s health insurance marketplace, which was created under the Affordable Care Act. Premium increases in 2019 are lower than in recent years and, in some rural and urban counties in Michigan, certain levels of coverage cost less than last year. The Center for Health and Research Transformation’s 2019 Health Insurance Marketplace Rate Analysis provides a detailed overview of the coverage available in Michigan this year, including county-by-county rates. Nine insurers are offering coverage through the marketplace in 2019, an increase of one insurer from 2018.
  • Inpatient and outpatient prospective payment system (PPS) hospitals, inpatient psychiatric facilities and PPS-exempt cancer hospitals can preview their data for the February update to Hospital Compare through Dec. 30 at the QualityNet Secure Portal. For hospitals participating in the inpatient and outpatient quality reporting programs, the data include their overall hospital quality star ratings. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has updated the star ratings methodology to address some stakeholder concerns following the July preview period and revised the preview reports and login process in an effort to enhance the user experience. • Michigan healthcare providers are advised to heighten monitoring and reporting cases of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM). Seven suspect cases of AFM in Michigan remain under investigation. Case counts are increasing nationwide and the first 2018 case was confirmed in Michigan Dec. 5. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently convened a task force to help define the cause of the condition and to improve treatment and outcomes for patients. For more information, contact Rob Wood at the MHA.
