Michigan Harvest Gathering to Provide 2.2 Million Meals

Posted on November 15, 2018

David Seaman, executive vice president and chief operating officer, MHA, shares how the MHA’s involvement in the Michigan Harvest Gathering is directly related to its mission to advance the health of individuals and communities.Attorney General Bill Schuette announced at the Nov. 8 Michigan Harvest Gathering celebration luncheon that, to date, the 2018 campaign has raised $305,000 and more than 403,000 pounds of food to help feed Michigan’s hungry residents, with three weeks remaining in the campaign. Food banks from across the state will be able to provide 2.2 million meals to those in need from these donations, which exceeds the goal of 2 million meals for the 2018 campaign.

The luncheon included the presentation of the Food Bank Council of Michigan’s Beacon of Light and Hunger Free awards that honored organizations from each food bank region across the state for their significant contributions to ending hunger. MHA Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer David Seaman spoke on behalf of the MHA to recognize the importance of food accessibility as it relates to overall health and the work the hospital community is doing to address this issue. Seaman highlighted the MHA and hospital contributions of approximately $2.9 million and about 3.5 million pounds of food during their past 20 years of participation with the campaign.

Hospitals that have not yet reported the results of their food and fundraising drives are encouraged to send their totals by the end of November via the MHA website or by contacting Andrea Duguay at the MHA. A list of participating MHA members and their campaign results will be announced in mid-December.
