Posted on November 01, 2018
The MHA’s Race of the Week series highlights the most pivotal statewide races for Election 2018. The series will provide hospitals and healthcare advocates with the resources they need to make informed decisions on Election Day, including candidates’ views and background.
MICHIGAN SECRETARY OF STATE:
Democrat Jocelyn Benson currently serves as CEO and executive director of the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving race relations and driving social progress in professional sports. She graduated from Wellesley College and has a law degree from Harvard University. In an Oct. 23 Bridge Magazine article, Benson said she wants to shorten wait times at Secretary of State offices, in addition to being a secretary of state that champions transparency and disclosure when it comes to campaign finance. Republican Mary Treder Lang currently serves as the vice president of major gifts at Vista Marie, a nonprofit organization that assists vulnerable youth in metro Detroit. She is a graduate of the University of Dayton. In an Oct. 23 Bridge Magazine article, Treder Lang said she would like to limit trips to the secretary of state to once every eight years and partner with Michigan businesses to expand kiosk opportunities so residents don’t have to rely solely on the 132 secretary of state branches. She would also like to increase election training for clerks and poll workers. For more information, visit marytrederlangforsos.com.
WHY IT MATTERS
In addition to licensing drivers and registering and titling vehicles, Michigan’s secretary of state also administers election law and voter registration. In addition, the Michigan Department of State, which is overseen by the secretary of state, maintains the Michigan Organ Donor Registry, a confidential database of residents who wish to be organ and tissue donors. Gift of Life Michigan, the state’s authorized organ recovery organization, may access the database to assist hospitals in cases where a transplant is pending. The process of signing up to be a donor has been streamlined to allow individuals to register when requesting or renewing a driver’s license or state ID card.
