More Than 250 Leaders Gather to Examine Patient Safety and Quality

Keynote speaker Tejal Gandhi, MD, chief clinical and safety officer, International Health Institute, Boston, presents safety and accountability. The 2018 MHA Patient Safety & Quality Symposium drew more than 250 clinical and administrative leaders to learn from national safety and quality experts and local hospital and health system teams. Topics included how to create a systems approach to safety that focuses on culture, teamwork and patient engagement; how to continue making strides in high reliability and transparency; and how to develop more effective workforce safety and wellness strategies. Tejal Gandhi, MD, chief clinical and safety officer, International Health Institute, Boston, and Bryan Sexton, PhD, director of the Patient Safety Center for Duke University Health System, Durham, NC, were featured speakers.

Attendees participate in group activities during a session on reducing burnout.The annual MHA Keystone Center Speak-up! Award was presented to Kassandra Gauna, RN, Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital, Charlotte (see related article). The award is presented to individuals or teams in MHA Keystone Center Patient Safety Organization who demonstrate a commitment to the prevention of harm.

During the event, participants had opportunities to connect with 20 organizations that exhibited products and services to enhance safety and quality.
