Be Rx Safe logoOn May 23, the MHA teamed up with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the Michigan Osteopathic Association, the Michigan State Medical Society and the Michigan Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network to announce the creation of the Be Rx Safe campaign, an effort designed to raise awareness about the dangers of prescription drug abuse and overuse and to encourage prescribers and patients to do their part in addressing the opioid crisis.

In commenting about the launch of the campaign, MHA CEO Brian Peters said that the Be Rx Safe effort is another tool that hospitals can use to empower and educate patients and healthcare providers about substance use disorders. The joint campaign is part of a continued commitment by the Be Rx Safe partner organizations to work collaboratively to share resources and to communicate consistent messages.

Be Rx Safe will focus on healthcare provider education, patient awareness, and the safe use and disposal of prescription drugs. The MHA, along with Michigan’s other provider organizations, received a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to support the campaign. The collaborative effort includes the development of provider education sessions related to opioid prescribing, pain management and the implementation of recently enacted laws to address the opioid epidemic. In addition to the MHA Keystone Center’s medication disposal tool and opioid knowledge self-assessment, the campaign includes a variety of educational resources:

In the coming months, the Be Rx Safe campaign will also include a social media component using #BeRxSafe. Members with questions should contact Brittany Bogan at the MHA.
