The Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) advocates for Michigan hospitals and the patients they serve. This includes all 144 community hospitals in the state, which are available to assist each of Michigan’s more than 10 million residents, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Michigan hospitals consist of various types of health care facilities, including public hospitals — owned by city, county, state or federal government — and nonpublic hospitals — individually incorporated or owned and operated by a larger health system. Within those general categories are several classifications of facilities.

The state’s critical access hospitals efficiently serve citizens in rural areas, where the facility is the only hospital within a certain minimum number of miles. Michigan’s teaching hospitals are among the best in the nation, training future physicians and surgeons while caring for the ill and injured.

Some of the hospitals in the state are specialized to treat specific conditions or populations. Rehabilitation hospitals work with handicapped or disabled patients to help restore or adjust their ability to perform everyday tasks. Children’s hospitals are especially suited to treating pediatric patients and psychiatric facilities are geared toward providing psychiatric, psychological and social work services. Veterans Affairs hospitals provide a variety of medical services for veterans of the U.S. military.

The MHA serves all of these hospitals, as well as many health-care-related organizations such as law firms specializing in health care and insurance companies that focus on health or medical liability coverage. Using their collective voice, the MHA advocates for its members before the legislature, government agencies, the media and the public. In addition, the association provides members with essential information and analysis of health care policy and offers relevant education to keep hospital administrators and their staffs current on statewide issues affecting their facilities.

Hospital Listing

The following is a list of the general, medical-surgical acute-care inpatient facilities in Michigan. This list does not include other types of hospitals, such as those specializing in psychiatric and rehabilitation services. All hospitals listed are members of the MHA.

Health Facilities Atlas

The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH), in collaboration with the Michigan State University Department of Geography, released the 2008 MDCH Licensed Health Facilities Atlas on the MDCH Web site. This atlas displays all licensed health facilities operating in the State of Michigan in 2008. This atlas is maintained by the MDCH and is here for informational purposes only.
