Mission
Michigan Green Healthcare Committee recognizes the
interconnection between health and the environment. We support
and encourage sustainability initiatives that improve human
and environmental health, protect the unique resources of the
state and strengthen Michigan’s healthcare sector.
MGHC will:
- examine our ecological
impacts
- establish annual goals
- promote sustainable
strategies for healthcare facilities
- propose and create joint
initiatives with key stakeholders
- develop and disseminate
educational materials
- generate new ideas and
initiatives to respond to emerging needs and concerns
- meet environmental,
economic and social objectives
MGHC will work to
establish a framework for Michigan’s healthcare sector
to improve the health and well being of the states’
ecology and its citizens.
Membership &
Communications
- Membership for this
committee requires yearly enrollment.
- The committee term runs
from the beginning of July to June of the following
year.
- Members will receive
communications monthly to keep them informed about
webinars, committee events, and new action items.

Michigan Green Health
Care Annual Conference
The Michigan Green Health
Care Conference is intended for individuals and
organizations interested in promoting sustainability
practices within the healthcare industry. We encourage
sustainability officers, dieticians, clinicians, engineers,
architects, pharmacists, environmental services, food and
nutrition, and maintenance managers, energy coordinators,
business partners, governmental agencies, public health
professionals, non-profits, and anyone else with a passion
for reducing the ecological footprint of the healthcare
industry to attend the conference.
The Michigan Green Health
Care Conference is scheduled for Wednesday, September 12,
2012, at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor. Hospital
tours will take place at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital on
September 11 with a complimentary reception to follow. To

- Healthier
Hospitals Initiative
- The Healthier Hospitals Initiative, organized by
Healthcare Without Harm, Practice Green Health and
The Center for Health Design, is a call-to-action
for an entire industry. It is an invitation for
healthcare organizations across the country to join
the shift to a more sustainable business model, and
a challenge for them to address the health and
environmental impacts of their industry. With that,
the MHA has signed a letter of agreement to become a
supporting organization for this initiative. It is
the goal of the MGHC to promote this initiative
amongst Michigan hospitals and increase
participation.

- This advisory group
of hospital members has been formed to work on
healthy food initiatives.
- Pharmaceutical Waste
- The Healthcare
Pharmaceutical Waste Management Workshop was held on
January 26 at Lansing Community College, West
Campus. A follow up webinar will be held on July 26.
