In March 2010, national health care reform legislation that originally developed in the U.S. Senate passed the U.S. House of Representatives and was then signed into law by President Obama, marking a historic day in the progress towards health care coverage for all Americans. The MHA Health Reform Resource Center will monitor provisions of the law that affect Michigan hospitals and health systems and provide tools, information and resources for members as reform is implemented.

What's New

The U.S. Supreme Court recently heard oral arguments on issues challenging the Affordable Care Act March 26-28. The law, which passed two years ago, is being challenged on four fronts:

  • whether the individual mandate is constitutional
  • whether eliminating the individual mandate affects the viability of the remainder of the law
  • whether the Anti-Injunction Act prevents a court decision before the law's penalties take effect in 2014
  • whether the Medicaid expansion infringes on states' rights

Oral arguments were recorded and can be heard on the U.S. Supreme Court website. In addition, the American Hospital Association followed the proceedings on a dedicated blog, which features updates, recordings and related news and can be seen at ahahealthreformlaw.wordpress.com.

The Court is expected to hand down its decisions in June. MHA members will be kept informed of developments. Members with questions Laura Appel (lappel@mha.org) at the MHA.
